Welcome to the art of Karla Dickens

Karla Dickens was born in Sydney without connection to her history and aboriginal heritage. The process of moving from childhood to the present was a colourful and, at times, destructive journey of self discovery.

Twenty one years ago Karla Dickens found a positive and creative outlet in her life upon enrolling at Sydney’s National Art School. Throughout this time, Dickens has continued to create art, always taking the viewer on her personal journey – an often confrontational yet always rich and diverse artistic practice.

Over twenty solo exhibitions, over thirty group shows, a large number of community based projects and various teaching experience, Dickens has emerged into a successful and well respected artist.

Karla’s Aboriginality and sexuality do profoundly inform her work – yet her insight and breadth of artistic practice both embraces and moves beyond the notion of identity politics. Her work truly fosters an intra and cross cultural dialogue through the forum of contemporary art.
